Point of View

The following passage is the very foundation statement of Christianity, so what it means is very, very important. John 3:16: “ For God so loved the world , that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life .” So, god is making a really big sacrifice for us, right? Well, that depends on your point of view. Here’s what I see in that passage. “Your birth offends me. I can forgive you, but someone has to die.” Once we scrape off the sticky sweet frosting of words like “love” and “gave,” isn’t that the real message of that passage? You may think god is doing the sacrificing here, but isn’t he also the one demanding the sacrifice, and rather arbitrarily, since he makes the rules?
