Battered Believer's Syndrome
Just like the spousal syndrome it's named after, this disorder is characterized by the inability to see anything but love in the actions of the abuser. Every hit is the victim's fault as this is the only rationalization to keep the image of someone who is loving alive.
And so it is with the believer. No matter what terrible event happens in their life they can't see their god as anything but a loving father. He never gets any of the blame. It's either a lack of faith, too much sin or perhaps not enough praise that day.
Suppose a believer's child was murdered. Can she conceptualize her god idly watching as the event took place, doing absolutely nothing? Yes, but it was for a reason. Her god still loves her, of course -- that's what she been programmed to believe. She'll probably come up with the standard answer designed to preserve the love like "god works in mysterious ways," "it was for the greater good," or "god wanted him in heaven."
All these answers skirt the real issue, though. To see how one need only exchange the deity in the equation with a person. What if a police officer sat and watched silently as a child was murdered even though he had the power to stop it? Oh, the rules are different now, aren't they? Why, though? Different programming, basically.
People are programmed to see police officers as people who have to help and should even risk their lives saving people. If one of them doesn't help, they're not doing their job and they become just as bad as a criminal. They are neglecting their duties to the people.
Gods and goddesses, on the other hand, whose "actions" are based on the hit and miss randomness of chance events, are expected to not do anything in many situations. These beings are also endowed by their creators, us, with great magical powers and control our destiny in the afterlives we made up. Add to this equation the endless stream of loving propaganda that is shot into the believer's brain and the resulting mix of expectation of inaction, fear and love combine to make a powerful formula able to transform an abuser into an angel.
Atheism frees a person from this madness. Instead of wondering why some invisible cloud father would allow or cause something to happen, we take it as it is: reality. Why did it happen? We look to real causes. Why was her son murdered? Look at the the murderer himself. Look at the events in his life that led up to the event. Where were the police? Could a stronger police presence have thwarted this? Look at the safety precautions the mother in this story could have taken in order to prevent this tragedy. Look at what the boy himself could have done to avoid such a situation in the first place.
By thinking critically, instead of superstitiously, we affect the real world in a positive way. We can come up with real solutions instead of asking for divine intervention that never arrives. It is only us who can save ourselves.

WTF? That is so messed up!
I knew the buy-bull god is an ugly character, but damn that is cold!
What else should we expect from a walking/talking contradiction such as your christian self?
Anonynick said:"This world as you know it is full of GARBAGE its full of hate, its full of tears, its full of death."
This world does not stand a chance with people like you in charge.
My life is great. I recycle, I sleep, I wake up, I feed the children, We laugh, we play, We love each other, we walk barefoot in the grass, we camp, we sing and play music, we read great books, we help anyone in need if we can, we volunteer twice a month, we have peace of mind, and we share this world EQUALLY, with all people.
The only folks that divide humanity into a contradictive state of affairs are those that perpetrate the lie of religious faith. They destroy the trust we have in ourselves and each other. They enslave your thoughts and distort your dreams.
These fanatical religious folks have no clue about what the world needs now. They are responsible for the LACK of it. It is not some great thing hidden away behind cosmic dust. Rather, it is an honor we protect within ourselves so that we may share it with others in this world equally.
Love is only possible when we embrace mankind.
If you hate THIS life so much, why don't you just pray for cancer?
If this life is so bad, then why do you remain dedicated to living?
The garbage you fear in this world is all in your mind my friend. The hatred you spew for this world is a result of being instructed to think of it with such disdain.
They actually teach you this hatred and mistrust, because it keeps you stupid to your responsibilities here. It allows you to blow off this world, in hopes of scoring big in the next.
The person that I am without god/religion, would never give up on this world, until the day I die. Sure, there are some major problems in this world, but we can change that with hard work and love for our fellow man.
Together WE WILL heal this world.

Nick, please read your bible.
You are a True christian?
Are you sure?
Because, no one is in heaven right now, except your alleged god and his alleged son, which he killed to make himself happy with us, again! Wait, don't forget the holy ghost. That means, heaven only contains 3 unknown magical beings, which can combine into one, POOF!
Yeah, I know...it sounds unbelievable, but that is what it is, according to the ho-lee babble.
You all don't go to heaven until...well, you should know when.
Imagine if there was no need for a heaven and hell, when THIS life of wellness and compassion is the ultimate goal to achieve. People could live for one another, to honor the sacredness of OUR world, as we trust our own children to carry the message on into the future so the greatest love of all may live on, as love from within.
That is my objective in life and I teach my children the value in this dream everyday, without threatening them with condemnation from the big ? from above and without telling them they must trust in an imaginary friend named Jesus. They are great kids because we treasure the greatest life we have ever known, here and now, on this Earth.
Try to find hope within yourself, you are making me sad for you.
God-less me loves you!
I'll keep that in mind next time I am in a position to stop a murder. I'll be godly and walk away.
I'm sorry anony, but that comment is stupid in too many ways.
Most of our nations' laws are written based on Jewish ethics.
No, God does not condone murder. But there is a choice. God could smite that murderer. But God loves that person too, he knows how they are messed up and need him as much as (or more than) the person being murdered.
We only see things from our own little egocentric view point, and as much as we pretend to care for people, we mostly only think of ourselves.
God could step in and correct all the injustice in the world, but if he did - you would be in trouble. I bet you're not the perfect "model citizen" you'd like everyone to think you are? God gives everyone a choice. If he intervened, there would be no choice - you wouldnt be able to be atheist.
God is having mercy on you in allowing you to live. But your time is running out... he is coming to judge the murderers, the liars, the selfish, the thieves, the sinners, they will not be able to stand in His holy presence.
You ask for proof? I know what you mean, if there was something physical we would not need faith (faith is being sure of what we hope for) But God does give believers His holy Spirit, you can experience His holy Spirit today; it is His seal of salvation - our proof that we are going to heaven. And our whole lives are evidence to God's goodness.
Melissa, if you "Try to find hope within yourself" you will be searching for a long time. We are all defficient, we are incomplete without God. When you reach the end of yourself - remember this: God is waiting for you, and He still loves you.
God bless you all, I pray that by the power of the Holy Spirit that you will find faith in God through Jesus Christ who lives so that you can live. Choose life!
-Tim

Dan says,
Mr. Tim! I have read many posts here by Christians who have come to witness to us, and submit that you all sound exactly alike. As if the same Christian clichés have been programmed into all of you. You all have surrendered rational thought in able for you to hang on to your "death cult"
I have read many of Melissa's posts, and I submit that she is more complete than all of the Christian posters who have ever written here put together. She doesn't expect to reach the end of herself till she leaves this life. If you could think like her for one day, you would never go back to being a Christian clone.
On the other hand, you have reached the end of yourself and are just waiting to die and go to a make believe heaven.
Dan (Who will take this life, over a promise of living in paradise forever while some of the best people who have ever lived are frying in hell)
