A tribute to George Carlin

Bullshit

The Ten Commandments

On June 22, 2008, American comedian George Carlin was admitted to St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, California complaining of chest pain. He died later that day at 5:55 p.m. PDT of heart failure at the age of 71. He had a history of cardiovascular issues, including several heart attacks.

"Frisbeetarianism is the belief that when you die, your soul goes up on the roof and gets stuck."
-- George Carlin
Raised in the Roman Catholic faith, Carlin often denounced the idea of God in interviews and performances. He invented the parody religion Frisbeetarianism, defining it as the belief that when a person dies "his soul gets flung onto a roof, and just stays there" and cannot be retrieved.

Carlin also joked that he worshiped the Sun, because he could actually see it, but prayed to Joe Pesci (a good friend of his in real life) because "he's a good actor", and "looks like a guy who can get things done!"

Carlin also introduced the "Two Commandments", a revised "pocket-sized" list of the Ten Commandments in his HBO special Complaints and Grievances, ending with the additional commandment of "Thou shalt keep thy religion to thyself."

I was lucky enough to see him live in March in Boston, MA.

He was hunched over and looking very old, but his timing was spot on and his mind was clearly still sharp as ever.

He had amazing rants against religion, death, old age, and lots of other topics. It was a great show. What I loved most was he did not pull punches for his audience, and I think many were shocked at his candor about not believing in a god while still talking about god.

He will be sorely missed on this planet.

George's comedic attacks on religion are what started me on the path of doubt and reason. I owe him so much.

Miss you, George. If there is a god up there, give'em FUCKIN' HELL!!

I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. What a difference a few months makes! Not long ago I would not have listened to George Carlin, thinking he was just a reckless heathen that wouldn't submit his will to the loving god of the universe. How ignorant i was. I wish i had listened to him before, maybe it would have given me the slap in the face i needed. Oh well, better late then never....

I really don't know what to say... He really was a crucial part of "opening my eyes" to the BS in the world. There was more truth is one of his comedic routines than in a thousand sermons...

Missed is almost an understatement...

Thanks for this post. I'm a Christian and a life-long Carlin fan as well, and I did my own little tribute to the man, from a similar-but-different perspective. Thought you might be interested.

George was my all time favorite comic hands down. His bits on religion were second to none. I need to go home and have a George Carlin CD marathon.

I loved his "Interview with Jesus" bit. God Damn that was funny.

Pure comic gold- and such wisdom! What a loss for all of us still here. Thanks for including the videos; they made me laugh.
