-- Pat Robertson, fundraising letter, 1992

Just like what Nazi Germany did to the Jews, so liberal America is now doing to the evangelical Christians. It's no different. It is the same thing. It is happening all over again. It is the Democratic Congress, the liberal-based media and the homosexuals who want to destroy the Christians. Wholesale abuse and discrimination and the worst bigotry directed toward any group in America today. More terrible than anything suffered by any minority in history.

Shay, I don't think a mistake should go hand in hand with "a just retribution for improper sexual misconduct". You think people deserve to die because of one mistake...mate you've got issues of the wrong kind. Do you think AIDS awareness in african nations is good enough for these people to realise what they are doing? Its the very fact that she (MT) is saying they deserve it which is the issue.

I would like to point out that these comments and quotations are from PEOPLE. I don't think any Christian would argue that people who call themselves Christians are perfect. People have terrible ideas sometimes (as expressed by the quotations above). And unfortunately they mis-represent an entire belief system. I ask that people keep an open mind. There are a lot of wonderful Christian quotations as well as some more negative ones. I am not saying that the quotations above are not valid, just that it is important not to only look at negative points of a religion- caused by people.

Hatred is the Christian way and it always will be. Although it claims to "love thy neighbor", they often claim the Old Testament when they want to hurt someone and the New when they want forgiveness. Even Jesus said he didn't care if you listened to his words or not, but then later said that he didn't bring peace, but the sword and would turn father against son and mother against daughter. Prince of Peace my ass.

SEE FOR YOUR SELF EVEN THE EARLY 3 CENTURIES & DISCIPLES OF JESUS DID NOT CELEBRATE THE BIRTHDAY OF CHRIST AS IT WAS THE CUSTOM OF PHAROAH [PHIRON]/ GENTILES AND DEMON GODS-
WHEN CHRISTIANITY ITSELF IS NOT THE PIONEER OF BIRTHDAYS HOW CAN [TUK]HAVE THE GUTS TO IMPOSE IT OUR BELOVED PROPHET SALALHU ALAI HI WASLAM-
What is the origin of birthday celebrations?
Birthday celebrations are actually rooted in paganism.
T...he Encyclopedia Americana (1991 edition) states:
"The ancient world of Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Persia celebrated the birthdays of gods, kings, and nobles."
Authors Ralph and Adelin Linton reveal the underlying reason for this. In their book The Lore of Birthdays, they write:
"Mesopotamia and Egypt, the cradles of civilization, were also the first lands in which men remembered and honoured their birthdays. The keeping of birthday records was important in ancient times principally because a birth date was essential for the casting of a horoscope."

So, there is a direct connection between the Pagan practice of birthday celebrations and astrology (horoscopes and fortune telling).

Not surprisingly then, the ancient Jews did not celebrate birthdays, regarding them as Pagan. Also, The World Book Encyclopedia (volume 3, page 416) states:

"The early Christians did not celebrate His [Christ's] birth because they considered the celebration of anyone's birth to be a pagan custom."

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_origin_of_birthday_celebrations

Down to the fourth century Christianity rejected the birthday celebration as a pagan custom.

This force is trying to weed out people who are irrational by seeing who would be stupid enough to believe in his god illusion so easily. George Carlin sums it up:
Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there’s an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever ’til the end of time! But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He’s all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can’t handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. Now, you talk about a good bullshit story. Holy Shit!”

"Try to see the good in people instead of looking for flaws."

Yes, Chelsey, that is exactly what I, an atheist, do. However, sometimes people's flaws are just way too obvious to ignore....especially the flaw of self-imposed delusion.

I removed my god-blinders a long time ago. Seeing things and people as they are (i.e. REALITY) doesn't always make life "brighter" but it does make it more honest, forthright, and sincere.

Yeah? My ten year old son's own blood poisoned him. He suffered for months and then died. I would say, that was too much for my son to handle. Take your ignorant platitudes and stuff it up your a**.

He gives us hope and it makes life so much more bearable with Him by your side holding your hand through the tough times.

Funny that, while my son suffered, god was nowhere to be found.

CC: "I can tell you that God exists because He is seeking you at this very moment."

Unsupported assertion. Empirical, physical proof, or retract the above statement.

"Why is it, that, nonbelievers exhaust so much time and energy opposing something that they do not believe exists?"

Because believers are screwing up the world that we share with them. When My rights are threatened by someone solely because their mythological storybook tells them them I should not *have* certain rights... I hit back. And continuing hitting. With extreme prejudice.

"The motivation behind challenging those who believe in God is that you are seeking an answer; you want someone to confirm the answers you so desperately seek."

Attempted mindreading. WMDave, may we stone this interloper as a false prophet? :-D

"God is always on your mind, because He wants to know you. "

Wants to know Me? Rather an odd statement to make about a supposedly omniscient being.

But I'll make a deal with you, CC. Tell your imaginary friend to quit it with the idiotic hide-and-seek games; reveal itself unambiguously to all of humanity regardless of creed or geographical location; and to make it crystal clear that there is no such place as "Hell"; no such thing as "Original Sin"; and no value whatsoever in substitutionary atonement. Then, and only then, will I consider conducting a dialogue with said being.

Not all Christians are like this and I cringe when ever someone slams the entire christian faith, just because some religious zealots started wagging their forked tongues.

If you seek to find the answer to understanding God, you cannot look to other people expecting to find someone who wont dissappoint you. We all have faults and whether Christian or not people make mistakes. The only perfect human was Jesus. You are truly blessed to see God in another. I can tell you that God exists because He is seeking you at this very moment. Why is it, that, nonbelievers exhaust so much time and energy opposing something that they do not believe exists? Why does it bother you that other people believe in God? The motivation behind challenging those who believe in God is that you are seeking an answer; you want someone to confirm the answers you so desperately seek. Your heart and mind desire to become unbound from questions of God, if only you could prove to believers that they are wrong, you could finally be free to move forward.
God is always on your mind, because He wants to know you. God created you with the aspiration that you would know Him and He is enveloping you with evidence and will keep questions of His existence directly on you.
Do you believe you can break away from dwelling on the chance of God is there? Maybe nonbelievers are bothered by people who believe because God is aggressively pursuing them. If you can bring yourself just to consider this possibility and tune into the right frequency (open spiritual eyes), you will not be able to help but see God all around you. He is waiting patiently for you to let Him in and if you do open the door you will be amazed at the power of His love and peace it will bring you.

It's been a while since I wrote that but felt I should respond. I have not had a perfect life by any means. I have experienced severe trauma and was basically a robot on auto pilot for a while. I could not see past the question - Why did this happen to me? I was absorbed in my self pity and was angry at God and everyone else. I wanted to blame everyone. I began drinking and trying to escape from that pain and of course that did not work, I sunk deeper and deeper into sadness. One day I took an hour to clear my head - did not think of anything but the water running and taking deep breaths in and out. I took at deep look at what I was carrying around; the pain, the anger, sadness, and hopelessness. I took a look at what part I had in those situations and how I could have handled it differently. I prayed to God and I asked Him to remove that burden and allow me to accept forgiveness and to forgive. I was transformed that day and God is the reason why. I do not conform to any standard of what is expected of me I can feel the Holy Spirit within me and I follow His guidance. It is better than anything I could have ever imagined possible. The kingdom of God is here and I can experience that through the Holy Spirit. I am not ignorant nor living on a pink cloud nor perfect. I was just trying to share the joy that I know have. I pray that you experience the grace of God and find hope when life's challenges seem unbearable; He has not forgotten us! The storm will pass.

CC,

"God" had his chance, so many times, to make himself/herself known to me. If begging, pleading, quoting scripture etc. etc. doesn't get a revelation from God, then what would? Now that so many of us have finally concluded there is no God receiving our requests, why do you impugn our motives?

The tables could be turned onto you in this subjective lunacy (I borrowed the term from bdp) of questioning motives. Why do you need to say such things to us? Perhaps you're the one whistling in the dark. You REALLY don't believe in God so you have to protest that we REALLY believe in God. You poor denial-ridden theist.

I have an idea. Why don't you quit playing X-Men mutant with telepathic powers and accept that people have rationally concluded that there is no god?

What I am doing on this site is fleshing out a new world view in light of the fact that I can no longer believe in the god of the Bible.

There are philosophical, psychological, hermeneutic, epistemological, political, sociological, interpersonal and scientific implications for such a major change in world view. There is much to talk about. And, there are some very intelligent, insightful people here with which to discuss the implications of that major life overhaul.

So, unless you have something intelligent to contribute (from a theistic perspective, even) to the process, then kindly apply your telepathic powers of motive reading elsewhere.

I also highly recommend you engage in wemdave's thought experiment as well.

Chelsey: I can feel the Holy Spirit within me and I follow His guidance

Funny how the ONLY god evidence we ever are presented with, is how a god-believer can FEEL their god.

To me, this kind of so called evidence, rates right up there with the loonies who tell me they can feel demons attacking them and are in the middle of a spiritual war with such demons.

The kingdom of god is NOT here Chelsey, and if you would look outside your tiny god-bubble, you would realize that the world is not all about you and your mental god.

Please explain to me why this (un) Holy Spirit has chosen to communicate (inhabit?) you, but has ignored every ex-xtian on the website?

In a nutshell, for the same reason is SHOULD bother you, to have someone who is mentally ill, pushing their delusions upon the rest of society.

Instead, your god delusion spreads amongst our society, like a pox.
You infect innocent children with your mental disease, ensuring the infection continues on.
