Holy Christian Beatdown

By Dr. Zachary Moore

In Cobb County, Georgia, the same mecca of rationality that declared all biology books must be labeled to protect the dear, innocent children from the dangerous message of evolutionary theory, a couple faces a murder charge stemming from the deadly discipline used on their son, inspired by the teachings of their unique Christian church.

Sonya and Joseph Smith, of the Remnant Fellowship Church (also of the "Weigh Down Workshop" weight-loss plan), followed along with the church's policy of physically disciplining children with strikes from foot-long glue sticks. According to this article:

On Oct. 8, 2003, emergency crews were called to the Smiths' home in Georgia after the couple reported Josef was having trouble breathing. He died the next day at an Atlanta hospital.

Sonya Smith told police that on the day he died the couple had disciplined Josef with a series of glue-stick whippings, delivered in increments of 10. She said the boy was locked in a closet and made to pray to a picture of Jesus affixed to the ceiling. He was monitored in the kitchen via a camera in the closet.

Laura Boone, a 17-year old who used to babysit for Remnant families, testified about what she saw when hired to work at a Remnant church function:

"There were more than 20 kids total there," she said. "All the adults were getting ready to go into the worship room, and Josef Jr. was crying really hard in the corner. I asked his dad what he wanted me to do, and he looked right at me, and he hit his fist into his hand really hard."

Boone said Smith Sr. told her to hit his son, "Hit him hard," she recalled Smith telling her.

"I just told him I didn't feel comfortable hitting his son," she said. "So, he took Josef in the little room next door, and we could hear Josef crying really hard and his dad hitting him."

Boone said Josef returned to the nursery area still crying but with no visible marks on his body.

That was the last time Boone or her friends accepted a baby-sitting job at Remnant or for a Remnant family, she said.

The church seems to be an odd weight-loss group/fundamentalist Christian cult of some sort:

Like other members, Steve Miozzi and his wife joined Remnant after taking a Weigh Down class at their church in east Cleveland, Ohio. He said he and his wife were initially enthralled.

"You walked into the church, and you thought this is what heaven must look like," said Betsy Miozzi.

Everyone was thin, their teeth white, the children well behaved, and many appeared to be financially successful, she said. And everyone was "lovebombing" the couple, she said, using the church's terminology for friendly embracing of new visitors.

But when Steve Miozzi sought help on how to deal with an 11-year-old boy misbehaving during worship services, he said he was told by church leader Ted Anger to beat the back of the boy's thighs with a glue stick. If the boy didn't behave he was to keep repeating the procedure, and if the boy continued to misbehave he was to put him in a room with nothing but a Bible, Miozzi said.

Miozzi says that when he visited the Brentwood church for worship services, there were "glue sticks sticking out of diaper bags" in the aisles.

Anger dismissed Miozzi's account last week, saying he never prescribed a specific way to spank a child.

"I didn't sit there and give people manual instructions about discipline," Anger said. "It's always been about teaching principles. It's about putting the parents back in control with love and boundaries."

Child discipline is not what Miozzi says prompted him and his wife to leave the church.

They left after three years because of a church philosophy that he said did not allow any questioning of church leaders. The strict obedience to their authority "destroyed my personal relationship with Jesus Christ," he said.

Also, he said, he was taken to task for not losing enough weight.

But according to Remnant's leader, Gwen Shamblin:

Spanking a child is very different from hitting a child. Hitting is not spanking. Hitting is inflicting pain in anger. Spanking is a reluctant feeling that is necessary, and it does hurt the parent more than the child.

Spanking is a time-tested, ancient teaching from the Bible… Every child is different, and some parents in the Remnant, all they have to do is give the child a disapproving look, and some children are strong-willed. Teaching and constant direction in the form of both positive and, very occasionally negative, reinforcement is the most loving way to raise a child.

Call it what you want; I think it's clear that if you cause a child's death, you've done something immoral.

It makes me sick.

No wonder these people believe in God- they dont know how to think for themselves.

We should not be surprised. If one looks at the history of the "christian" church all one will see is abuse, murder, and hypocrisy. When christians are in charge there is horrible attrocities. Just look at history.

I hope they through the book at these lunitics.

These bastards should be beaten to death with their own glue sticks. Its REALLY hard not to to become "unglued" at something like this. This church should be forced to shut down and those in charge of teaching at this church held responsible as assessories to murder of this poor child.

Aye, let's give those "parents" (HA!) an adult-level spanking. I'll bring the morning stars.

Black people worshiping the symbol of a religion that was used to justify their slavery has always seemed a bit odd to me!

Oh of course not. We can never, ever blame precious precious Jebus. Put everyone in jail, burn down the entire world, but don't blame Jebus. Blame everyone else BUT the source of the fucking disease (and it is a mental disease, been there, done that). Puleeze.

Do yourself a favor and get a life.

Indeed we can't. For jebus to be blamed, he'd first have to exist.

Always the same with you morontheists. Always the same old crap you babble. Even if your bullshit has been debunked a hundred times before, you'll jump right in, braindead as you are, and babble it for the 101st time. And complain when we call you the idiot you are.

Fucktards.

Oh yeah? Ever try to "spank" an adult for misbehaving? Know what they call that? Assault.

(That's assuming you had the courage to try, as most likely, they'd hit back, unlike the small, weaker children. Sick fuckers.)

You cant blame christ for the actions of men.

Well, yes you can and here is why. The bible claims that christ was there at the begining of the world. Well he suppossedly was involved in the writing of the bible. The bible suggest the beating of your kids ( spare the rod spoil the child), we all know the verses. Then you have christians who cannot use their own brain that take this scripture and apply it. So yes we can blame jesus for teaching such trash in the old testament.

Let me first say I am a praticing Christian. (I'm sure I'll get lots of flack just for that mere statement)

Well I really don't understand how the child died from being spanked with a glue stick. I may have missed that in the reading. However,it is a horrible thing for any child to die before their parents' and especially horrible if the child was put to death by the parents. I've been spanked with much worse things during my up bringing, and in all honesty, I needed to be spanked. I was not beaten! Those are 2 different things. So in no way am I condoning these Christian parents.

The fact that they are Christian actually means nothing, except to the followers of this website. Cause we all know of THOUSANDS of cases of NON or EX Christians that have abused, raped, molested, even killed THEIR children. So to make this a matter of attacking their Christianity is ludicrous. When a non christian commits these crimes who do we attack? We attack THAT person for THEIR actions. But in this situation we go as far as to attack Jesus!
As Kanisha put it you can't blame Christ for what a man does! Blame the man, they are the idiots!

I believe that when people, [who are not Christians], try to understand a christian they automatically assume that we as Christians think we are better or "holy", or perfect, or whatever other insacious assumptions. The thing is we ARE just "mere" men, that make horrible mistakes. That interpret the bible without logic at times, that lie, cheat, and steal, just like any other non-christian "mere" man. The only difference is that we have commited to a belief that we feel is higher than ourselves. And though at times we many not get it right, we may not be perfect we understand that we are not made to be perfect. Once you start to understand that you don't have to constantly fight an uphill battle. What is wrong with that? You have your belief, we have ours, end of story.

That's because Christians are constantly telling anyone who will listen that they ARE better than atheists, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, etc, etc, and you are no different:

we have commited to a belief that we feel is higher than ourselves

Then when an incident like this happens, all of a sudden you're no better than anyone else. There's a term for this - it's called hypocrisy.

Which is one reason why we rejected your religion. In the real world that is called hypocrisy. And I reject the excuses that are essentially " I get out of Hell by faith" crap.

And can I get a rousing "Bullshit" for this particular one:

...assume that we as Christians think we are better or "holy", or perfect, or whatever other insacious assumption...

We don't have to assume one goddamn thing. Yo, EX-Christians here! We've lived it. And you DO set yourself as better(especially in behavior, you're the group constantly trying to regulate and legislate the behavior of others). Remind me again who Jerry Falwell blamed for 9/11? Who Pat Robertson blamed for Katrina? It sure as shit is never blamed on misbehaving Christians.

"horrible mistakes"

Yes, just little, horrible, mistakes, that's all these things are to Christians. Why? Because they aren't perfect, just forgiven.

Oh, and they are also filled with the magical, mysterious, Holy Sprite! (spelling intentional)

Your religion is supposed to transform you into a "new man." How did Paul put it? "I am dead in Christ, but nevertheless I live. Yet not me, but Christ in me."

"I am a new creature in Christ. Old things are passed away. Behold, all things are become new."

Christianity makes claims and promises that it FAILS to fulfill. Don't blame Christ? Why not? Didn't he say that HE WOULD BUILD HIS CHURCH? Mighty fine building job he's been doing the last 2,000 years.

Bullshit.

It's all bullshit.

That's the point of these CHRISTIAN parents being roasted here. Christianity is all BULLSHIT.

However, if these fine upstanding citizens had done something heroic, the first thing we'd hear about is that they are CHRISTIANS. And we'd be asked, "Can't you see how wonderful it is to be a Christian. See what accepting Jesus into your heart can do for you? Being a Christian is the best thing a person can do... yada, yada, yada."

BUT, when the CHRISTIANS turn out to be complete wack-jobs, then we are told not to criticize Jesus for their bad behavior.

Jesus gets the credit when people do good things, but if the people do something ugly, then that has nothing to do with Jesus.

Christian. Can you hear yourself? Can you not see that such logic makes NO SENSE?

Jesus, if he ever lived at all, is dust. He's dead. He was just a man, and he's dead. And his legacy, a bizzare religion, is bullshit.

So where was your Jesus when this kid was being beat to death? Watching? Yet, he did nothing....

No one here blames "christ". He doesn't exist.

I honestly don't understand why christians feel the need to come to this website and try to bleat their opinions here. Why would they think any of us are interested in what they have to say? Why waste our time and theirs, taking up band space? What do they hope to accomplish? All it does is piss us off, which I can only assume is their goal.

As for the parents who beat their kid to death, I live in Atlanta and saw these 2 morons on the news. Their big mistake was, they took the word of their church elders as their authority and blindly did what they were told, and their kid died because of it. They were found guilty and will now spend the rest of their natural lives in jail. The church leaders who started this mess to begin with dance merrily away. Granted, they stand exposed to anyone with any sense, which means their church will continue to florish.

They come here for purely selfish reasons. Preaching the bullshit to them ebil unbelievers results in either new converts (glory to gaaaawd!) or an example of pious suffering for the heavenly sadist (due to us mocking them for their idiocy).
Within the cults of the braindead, it's a win-win situation.

Also known as "faith". Blind obedience is the core of Christianity (frankly, that is true for all three stooges of Abraham). And the product? Irrational belief and behavior that defies logic, common sense and even basic human instincts such as parental instincts to protect and nurture your own children (Abraham and Issac, even Jesus himself "sacrificed' by his "father", Jonestown, Waco etc.).

All because they believe it is "moral" to unquestionally follow the dictates of some authority, real or imagined.

This makes me sick..This is EXACTLY why I've tried to stay away from religion...It makes people believe in absurdities and gives them a reason to act them out whenever they wish and then when someone tries to stand up to it they're always like who are you to question God..it's all bullshit..it's just a way for people to have control over others

You must never have read it. It's full of illogic of its own. That's when it isn't spouting hate.

Read the whole thing. Stop cherry picking!

You can use the bible to justify anything, *especially* brutality! The bible is the PROBLEM, not the solution.
