Garabandal: Occult, Christian, or What?
What do you make of the so-called miracles of Garabandal?
Never heard of it? Well, you're in for a treat:
From Answers.Com:
One poster here who has completely surrendered his mind to this modern myth, maintains that he knows that he knows that he knows that he knows it is "THE TRUTH™." However, he has nothing to offer in the way of evidence. NOTHING. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
When I pressed for evidence that his favorite deity exists, he told me I'd have to read apologetic books. This response provided me with considerable evidence that there is no evidence.
Anyway, here's some questions I'd like to ask of anyone interested in this topic: Do you believe the stories of Garabandal?
Is so, why do you believe them? If not, why not?

From Answers.Com:
San Sebastian de Garabandal is a village in Spain, located 90 kilometers from Santander, where beginning in 1961 four young girls claimed to see apparitions of the Virgin Mary. In July 1961 Maria Cruz Gonzalez, Jacinta Gonzalez, Mari Loli Mazon, and Maria Conception (known as Conchita) Gonzales, ages 11 and 12, astonished villagers by declaring that an angel had appeared to them, followed by an apparition of the virgin. These visions came several times in a week, when the girls went into trance, oblivious to the crowds surrounding them. Afterward they said they were talking to the Blessed Mother, the Virgin Mary. In the course of time, their trances were witnessed and recorded by priests and psychologists, even filmed. When the girls were pricked with pins and bright lights flashed in their faces they did not respond. From another site:
In October 1961 the message from the Virgin Mary was that they had been chosen to receive a message for the world: "We must make many sacrifices, perform much penance and visit the Blessed Sacrament frequently, but first we must lead good lives. The cup is already filling up and if we do not change, a very great chastisement will come up on us."
During such visions the girls were shown part of the chastisement threatened to the world, and they screamed in terror. The visions continued until 1965, when Conchita was 15 years old. Conchita asked the Virgin Mary to send proof that these visions were truly from God and was told that a great miracle would take place. Conchita reported, "The only thing I can tell is that it's going to be something that will happen in my village…. [T]he people who are sick are going to be cured. The day after there is going to be a sign in the pine trees … something we can see is gonna be there for ever." This miracle was to be announced eight days in advance.
By this time Conchita was the only one of the four girls to continue to see visions, and early in 1965 she stated that she was to receive a second worldwide message. It came late at night on June 18 before a large, expectant crowd. The following morning Conchita stated that the message was similar to the earlier one but much stronger: "Before the cup was filling up, now it is flowing over. Many cardinals, many bishops, and many priests are on the road to perdition and taking many souls with them. I, your Mother, ask you to amend your lives. You are now receiving the last warnings. I love you very much and do not want your condemnation. You should make more sacrifices, think about the passion of Jesus."
By November 1965 the visions ceased entirely, but Conchita was constantly pressed to reveal the date of the promised miracle, known only to her. Then quite suddenly Conchita lost faith in her visions, feeling it was all a dream. The village priest sent her to the bishop, who simply advised her not to talk further about the apparitions. She decided to leave the village, feeling she could not stay there with people wanting to talk to her and not knowing what to say to them. She emigrated to the United States and lived anonymously.
An advocacy center for the Garabandal visions was founded in New York, and a branch was formed in London. The center declares that before the "chastisement" there will be great miraculous signs that the world will accept as supernatural. There will be a worldwide warning that everyone will be aware of, regardless of race, color, or creed. Conchita will announce the great miracle eight days in advance. It will take place at Garabandal, where the sick will be cured and sinners converted, and in this spectacular miracle God will manifest at the pine trees a visible sign that will remain until the end of time for the conversion of the world.
Meanwhile Conchita lives quietly and avoids publicity, trying to escape the attention of the public. She did, however, take part in a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) television feature on Garabandal (telecast in the "Everyman" series in 1980), although she declined the standard fee for her appearance. This program highlighted the extraordinary challenge of such apparitions of the Virgin Mary and the dilemma they pose for those who see them.
Whereas the story of Lourdes now depends upon hearsay accounts and traditions of a century ago, the case of Garabandal is so topical that film records were actually taken of the girls during their trances, and direct interviews were recorded with Conchita herself. In the BBC feature it was clear from interviews with Conchita that she faces a strange problem, intensified as the date of the miracle, known only to her, presumably approaches. If there is no miracle, she will be branded a fake or hysteric. If there is a miracle, her privacy and family life will be invaded and disrupted by publicity.
Even the simple life of the villagers of Garabandal has changed as the village has become a great pilgrim center. Speculators have bought up land and new houses are being built to accommodate pilgrims. Every year thousands visit the pine trees where the miracle is scheduled. In the United States, Conchita Gonzales waits with her family and dedicates herself to "love God and do his work."
Fr. Robert Pelletier, the strongest advocate for the Garabandal visions in North America, has attempted to liken Garabandal to Fatima, even recounting a similar miracle of the sun's dancing in the sky. Unlike Fatima in neighboring Portugal, however, Garabandal has not received the endorsement of the Catholic Church. An initial inquiry under the bishop of Santander in 1967 reported to Rome negatively about the events at Garabandal. Rome did not act on these findings, and thus the church has made no official pronouncement on the validity of the apparitions.

The PropheciesSo, that's the history. And, believe it or not, there are quite a few "believers" who consider themselves Christians and who believe without a shred of doubt that these visions are absolute proof that their religion is "THE ONE TRUTH™."
The relatively few messages of Garabandal contain prophesies of supernatural events that will affect the entire world. In addition, the visionaries claimed that they were given a series of frightening warnings about the future. Each of the girls stated that Mary told them about a series of four extraordinary events which would reflect God's concern for the state to which humanity had fallen. These events were reported to be:
A worldwide warning to be experienced by everyone on earth. Its purpose will be to call humanity to amend its behavior and return to God.
A great miracle that will occur in the late winter or early spring within one year after the warning.
Permanent signs that will remain for all time at a pine grove near Garabandal and other selected locations of Marian apparitions.
A terrible chastisement during which many will die. Other prophecies indicate that this chastisement will eliminate up to two-thirds of humanity. The chastisement depends upon the response of humanity to the warning and the miracle.
The Warning
Conchita has stated, "The Warning, like the Chastisement, is a fearful thing for the good as well as the wicked. It will draw the good closer to God and warn the wicked that the end of times are coming." In describing the warning, Jacinta has said, "The Warning is something that is seen in the air, everywhere in the world and is immediately transmitted into the interior of our souls. It will last a very little time, but it will seem a very long time because of its effect within us. It would be like fire. It will not burn our flesh, but we will feel it bodily and interiorly." She goes on to describe astronomical phenomena: "like two stars -- that crash and make a lot of noise, and a lot of light -- but they don't fall. It's not going to hurt us but we're going to see it and, in that moment, we're going to see our consciences." In addition to these events, Conchita has stated that she was told by the Blessed Virgin in 1962 that after the death of Pope John XXIII, "There would be two more popes after Pope Paul VI and that one of the popes would have a very short reign. After that would come the end times but not the end of the world." If Conchita has interpreted this vision of Mary correctly, then Pope John Paul II is the last of the popes before the end times begin. Conchita said that she has been given the date of the Miracle by the Blessed Virgin and will announce the date eight days before it is to occur. Since the Miracle will occur after the Warning, it is highly likely that both the Warning and Miracle will occur within the next thirty years given Conchita's present age (late forties) if this apparition is valid.
Conchita has said through her Diary, "I am the only one to whom the Blessed Virgin spoke of the miracle. She forbade me to say what it will consist of. I can't announce the date either until eight days before it is due to occur. What I can reveal is that it will coincide with an event in the Church and with the feast of a saint, martyr of the Eucharist; that it will take place at 8:30 on a Thursday evening; that it will be visible to all those who are in the village and surrounding the mountains; that the sick who are present will be cured, and the incredulous will believe. It will be the greatest miracle that Jesus will have performed for the world. There won't be the slightest doubt that it comes from God and that it is for the good of mankind."
On September 14, 1965, Conchita said, "The sign that will remain forever at the pines is something we will be able to photograph, televise, and see, but not touch. It will be evident that it is not a thing of this world but from God." At another time, concerning the great miracle she added, "It would last about 15 minutes." On August 10, 1971, while talking to a group of Americans, she offered this revealing information: "It will take place on or between the eighth and sixteenth of March, April or May. It will not happen in February or June." Eight days in advance of the miracle ,Conchita will give notice to the world about its coming. Prior to the eight-day notice, God will send a warning to the entire world to purify it for the great miracle. Therefore, the world will receive two advance notices: the warning and the eight-day notice.

Moldy rye bread perhaps-?
Perhaps if they'd been Catholic instead of belonging to some Calvinist cult.
What have they got in the way of sick people on hand in Garabandal? Any amputees? Lou Gehrig's? Parkinson's?
You'd hate to waste a world class healing on some guys with the flu.
The Virgin Mary knew exactly who she could trust, those four innocent little girls, If you had a secret that you didn't want told, would you tell an adult? No, of course not!
What I can't understand, is why did Mary come down from Heaven blabbing her mouth off?
It's like, I've announced that, I've got a secret and you're not supposed to know what it is, Naa, Nan, Na, Na, Naa, and you can't guess what it is, you know like the game we all used to play when we were in the first grade. Would that happen to be a clue here?
Could it be that some of us are really just so afraid to grow up mentally? Nah!!
The Virgin Mary came down and spoke to me one time, but I'm not supposed to reveal to anyone what she said, but it has something about a great deludge, something about the Earth spinning out of it's orbit and crashing into the Sun, but it will only hurt the unfaithfull, because Jesus has a plan, but that's all I'm allowed to tell you all right now. I think the Sun is supposed to explode or something, but I'll tell you all eight days before before it happens.
All I can tell you is, to love God and do his work. You are now receiving the last warnings. I love you very much and do not want your condemnation. You should make more sacrifices, go see the passion of Christ.
No phone calls please, it's supposed to be a secret!
What can this so-called apparition at Garabandal achieve? Apparitions of the Virgin have allegedly appeared before but what they have achieved? Nothing!
Some years ago, people noticed that the Virgin had never appeared to people who have not heard of her or have the slightest belief in her, for example, Lamaists, Muhammadans or Hindus. After news of this spread, she allegedly started appearing, since 1990, in various places such as Syria, Iraq, India and Lebanon. Whether these apparitions are true, they have not been scientifically proven. Did the Virgin get the hint, or did some human beings attempt to prove a point by hatching the usual miracle stories, for consumption by the gullible?
